Awesome! Thanks so much for posting about us. We really would love to have any an all come to our workshops. We're ending this Autumn's offering of workshops with a Media Literacy townhall where we'll have an open discussion with parents and their concerns and ideas regarding the media we all encounter.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the comments back. I would like to learn more about the resident-run patrol in Ditmas and will def.look it up. Does anyone have any news of the lethal shooting that happened on Ocean Avenue and Woodruff near the McDonalds? Was this gang or drug related? I came across the crime scene on the way home from work. So now this is 2 bodies I have come across on my way home in less than 3 weeks. If crime is cyclical, I guess we are on the on the upswing.

Couldn't figure out how to contact you via this blog, but I wanted to let people know that we've been organized since 2005 and are very hooked into the local political scene. I encourage you all to learn more. Come to our website, join our discussion group, etc. We're having a block party on Kermit Place on Sept. 15th. Community Plan will be on display, there will be horses and food and Square Dancing.

Yee Haw!

In response to the post about the safety of Parkside avenue:
I have lived in Brooklyn my entire life, and all I can say is, you should have seen that block (Parkside bet. Ocean Ave. & Flatbush) in the late 70's. It was far worse than it is now.
Having said that, drug dealing, crime, etc. in any neighborhood, is cyclical. The murder of 8/22 is not a big surprise to me, but I wouldn't move solely based on this one occurrence.
I moved away from that area (Lincoln Rd. bet Ocean and Flatbush) based on many factors, not only drugs, crime, etc., but a general feeling of unsafety. Also, bottle fights in the middle of the street throughout the night and early morning hours, chicken bones, broken glass, pitbulls offleash, and an atmosphere of hostility.
Maybe it is time for the people who live there to become a more unified community-minded presence, to bolster the police presence with a resident-run patrol (similar to Ditmas Park-Midwood's), and show the unsavories that we care about the quality of life in the street.

Good luck,
NR

I was waiting for some news on this. I saw the crime scene right after it happened. Does anyone here live on Parkside? I am debating whether or not to renew my lease over here. I love this neighborhood most of the time, but over the past year It seems like there has been an increase in drug dealing, fights, and arrests on Parkside, right off of Flatbush. I was not surprised at all this shooting--it seemed only a matter of time considering the blatant drug dealing. And by the looks of the users, it's not the light stuff. There has been an increased police presence, but it's by no means 24 hours. Anyone have any insights into this corner and its general safety? Is this a fluke or an everyday occurrence? (Since the shooting didn't even make the news initially, I am thinking this is not so rare??)
